Republic Wireless launched last month. They are a highly anticipated cell phone carrier which will offer a unlimited plan that includes text, data, and voice for $19/month.
How are they able to bring the price so low? It actually depends on you, the consumer.
The service relies on users logging on to wifi connections and using wifi to connect you to the outside world. If you’re out of wifi range, it will fall back to a cellular connection.
Republic Wireless says that people are on Wifi about 60% of the time and It’s a requirement for the carrier. The difference between them and other carriers is Republic routes all voice through Wifi rather than using expensive cellular networks.
Sounds too good to be true? It might be. Membership is a privilege. Using too much cellular usage can give you the boot. If you decided to hop on the carrier, your new best friend will be the Cellular Usage Index (CUI) this tracks your cellular footprint, calculating using the last seven days of activity. Even if you have 0% Wifi usage, the community’s fair use threshold is limited to 550 minutes, 150 texts (not including received texts), and download 300 megabytes of data. If you go over, you will be reminded of the guidelines and to what extend you’ve crossed the threshold. They’ll provide you with tips for reducing your cellular footprint and plenty of opportunities to get back on track. If you still don’t comply, your membership will be terminated and they will help you find another carrier.
This carrier’s focus isn’t cellular usage, they are giving you the ability to connect your phone without using cellular coverage. If you are a Wifi person, this carrier is made for you.
